Local businesses are the cornerstone of community. As trailblazers on the path of success, they enrich the culture of our neighbourhoods, offer solutions, create job opportunities and power economic growth. We cultivate relationships with these local businesses and their owners - a strong thread woven into the fabric of our community.
By nature, the Sunshine Coast offers an environment primed to support entrepreneurs and start-up ventures. With the right tools and resources, small businesses are given the chance to succeed and grow.
These four local companies have turned ideas into reality with tenacity, resourcefulness, a spirit of innovation and smart financial guidance. We’re proud to support their success as they continue enriching communities and lives on the Sunshine Coast.

“Sunshine Coast Credit Union has become an integral part of our company and our lives over many years. They've supported us to grow two companies, both of which have allowed us to hire locals and put our money back into many independent small businesses for their products and services. Most importantly, they are there for us when times are tight as a business start-up, but also when times are good to make the most of money invested.”
Danise Lofstrom, Owner
Situated on an idyllic rural property in upper Roberts Creek, Bruinwood Distillery has a deeply rooted connection to our community. A small-batch farm gate distillery, Bruinwood houses several stills to develop their unique spirits. Each product is carefully handcrafted in small batches, infused with local botanicals and globally sourced ingredients. With a background in film and farming, Jeff Barringer and Danise Lofstrom bring a breadth of experience and passion to the artisanal craft of their specialty distillery spirits - including gin, vodka, nucino and liqueur.
The distillery was crafted by local artisan builders, and evokes a sense of natural wonder. Enter a warm, comfortable and inviting space to learn about their unique distilling process. You can also find them seasonally at farmers’ markets and coastal community events.

“Finding funding 23 years ago when we were building our lodge in Egmont, most banks did not even know about the Sunshine Coast - let alone offering a building mortgage for tourism businesses. As SCCU grew so did the opportunity for us, dealing with a local financial institution who was willing to support our growing needs, and who understood the Sunshine Coast. The benefit of working with SCCU is not having to explain who we are and what great opportunities we have here on the coast, they already know!”
Paul & Patti Hansen, Owners
A secluded gem at the edge of the wildIn March 1997, Paul and Patti Hansen bought seven acres of land from a German development company and established the West Coast Wilderness Lodge. Since then, the property has been re-zoned, remodeled and expanded to maintain environmental beauty and integrity, while minimizing impact on local wilderness and wildlife.
For over 20 years, West Coast Wilderness Lodge has been offering guests unsurpassed scenery, exceptional adventure opportunities, fresh seasonal cuisine and a variety of unique accommodations inspired by the Pacific Northwest.
The Lodge immerses its guest in west coast culture. From May to October, you can experience the full range of amenities at the Lodge, dine on the famous Inlets Restaurant patio, partake in an eco-tourism adventure, kayak with a guide, or journey to Princess Louisa Inlet and Chatterbox Falls via float plane and tour boat.

“Dave and I so appreciate that SCCU has offered such a personal approach to our business banking. Instead of having to pick options that we can try to fit our business into, they’ve shown us the best options to suit us. It feels very human and genuine. I love that I feel like my bank actually knows our needs and wants to help. It feels real.”
Jackie Lee-Coyle, Owner
For over 20 years, Dave Coyle has been handcrafting unique country-inspired furniture. Dave’s early experience in antique furniture restoration embeds a mark of authenticity in each original. Dave uses a variety of techniques to achieve a realistic antique look for each piece, including ‘milk paint’ type finishes, layering his paints, crackling his paints, and hand rubbing wax or clear stain finishes.
Each piece of handmade furniture is made of 100% renewable resource BC wood, with low VOC latex paints and environmentally conscious finishing products. To complement Dave's furniture, Jackie hand selects home decor that is invariably simple, unique and fresh to allow people to create their own inspired living spaces.

“SCCU has helped me and my business for over fifteen years. When I needed a loan, the process was convenient and the service was excellent. When I have a question or need assistance of any kind, their staff are courteous and always help in a timely matter. As a personal and business member, I benefit with local services for all of my banking needs. I am also a member of Pay It Local, which supports local merchants and provides discounts at select businesses. I know SCCU supports the community: from sponsoring events and fundraisers coast-wide, to providing bursaries and scholarships. They’ve even donated camping equipment to our local Girl Guides.” “When my daughter dropped into the branch to get her first banking card, the SCCU Advisor spent 15 minutes walking her through the card and mobile app process. She left confident on how to do her banking needs.”
